If you don't have time to soften your ice cream and it is in a Ben & Jerry's type of tub (cardboard), don't resort to the microwave.
Simply lay the tub on its side on a board and use a bread knife to cut slices, tub and all. Peel off the cardboard and serve. (This does not work for a plastic tub, of course.)
